๐ Can't find your ancestor in the census?
This is more common than you think. Here are the most likely reasons โ and what to do about each one.
๐
Their age is recorded differently than you expect
Census takers asked for age, not birth year, then calculated it themselves โ often incorrectly. Many people rounded to the nearest 5. Try searching 3โ5 years either side of what you expect.

Their name is spelled differently
Census clerks wrote what they heard. Foreign names were anglicised, misspelled, or phonetically guessed. Johann became John, Kowalski became Cowalsky, O'Brien became Obrien.

They hadn't arrived in the US yet
If your ancestor immigrated after the census year they simply won't be in it. Use the immigration filter above to focus only on censuses after their arrival year.

Young children were often missed or unnamed
Infants and young children were frequently omitted, listed only as "infant", given wrong ages, or recorded under a nickname. If your ancestor was under 5 in a census year they may simply not appear.

The record may be lost, damaged, or not yet indexed
Beyond the 1890 fire, many county records were damaged or lost. Some records exist but haven't been digitised โ meaning search engines won't find them even though they exist.
